Five materials from the South
Natural materials that carry the landscape of the South of Tunisia — Gabès in particular — and were long used in traditional crafts. The participants of the From & To People program rework them into contemporary pieces.
Wool
Local wool, long tied to everyday crafts in Tunisia and revalued today in the South. Needle felting shapes raw wool into three-dimensional forms, panels and fine details; wet felting, with warm water, soap and the hands, makes strong, flat textile surfaces.
Plaster
A natural resource, abundant in Tunisia and part of the local landscape. Moulding and modelling turn it into decor pieces and contemporary crafts that go beyond the expected.
Smar
Local plant fibres bound to the landscape, which call for a conscious hand: sorting, selecting and shaping by hand — a living, sustainable relationship with the material.
Palm fiber
Palm-frond fibres (saaf), abundant in the oases of the South. Precise splitting and braiding, in a collective approach, create contemporary art and craft pieces.
Handmade paper
Old paper given a new life, blended with the plant-fibre leftovers of the other workshops: handmade sheets with unique organic textures, rooted in a culture of reuse.
